Presently there are two new works forthcoming: first, a translation of Lakshminath Bezbarua’s Burhi Aier Sadhu, Old Mother Wise Tales and a work of non-fiction titled A Letter to Sunshine: Earth in a Nutshell.
The latter is about a little boy, from a remote town, who sheds knowledge about the world he lives in. Since no adult has the time to tell him the story of the world he writes a letter to Sunshine who has been witnessing the progress of the earth since the beginning of creation. The letter is allowed to drift with the wind. Sunshine receives and not only replies but also picks up the little boy, Bapu, one Monday morning. Sunshine and Bapu then select an imaginary island in the Pacific Ocean. There they both sit and begin the conversation.
The story of Earth begins with Australia on Monday, America and Antarctica on Tuesday, Africa on Wednesday, Europe on Thursday, and Asia on Friday. On Saturday the topic of discussion is on medicine, as human beings are totally dependent on the three natural kingdoms: vegetable, mineral and animal. On Sunday, music, that sublime art, is dwelled upon. The primary theme of the book is preservation of nature. Since the habit of reading these days has taken a rear seat, the author has made an attempt at putting forth facts and figures, history, geography and culture in a nutshell in order to make the exercise of reading enjoyable.
