Coolgrove Press is a small independent publisher based in Brooklyn. We
publish half-dozen or fewer titles each year, our main concern being quality
and relevance. Whether a book is specialized or potentially mass-market,
our goals are not monetary but literary, and a path to recognition and success.
There is a tradition of such publishers, some of great distinction, like Jack Kahane's
variously named Olympia/Odeon/Obelisk presses, which supported such writers as
William Burroughs, J.P. Donleavy, Henry Miller, Vladimir Nabokov, Anais Nin, et al.
John Martin's Black Sparrow Press, since bought out, was at the heart of American
literature of the sixties, with writers like Paul Bowles, Charles Bukowski and Joyce
Carol Oates. In non-fiction, Shambhala Publications, launched in the seventies, is
another press that crossed a cultural divide anticipating greater audiences for Tibetan
Buddhist traditions as expounded by living and expired teachers.
Coolgrove aspires to continue this tradition, publishing little known, sometimes
"extreme" writers of serious talent who challenge the literary establishment, and
who might otherwise not have the opportunity to be published and read.
Coolgrove will continue to focus on the nexus between visual arts and literature,
and in the coming months, as we review and rework our internet presence, works
by our artists will be accessible on our website.
Coolgrove is also developing an ongoing relationship with the visual arts,
and in the coming months, as we review and rework our internet presence,
works by our artists will be accessible on our website.
In our effort to embrace the potential of evolving media, we will provide useful
cross-referencing links to the e-world. Uploads of podcasts and videos and other
options will be available in the near future and last but not least, we will be releasing
our titles in e-book formats wherever appropriate.
We are no longer accepting queries. Submissions are being answered as soon
as we can.
