ABOUT THE TOPIC OF THE BOOK
This book is a culmination of the past ten years she has dedicated her life to the water issues of India and global warming by research and applying her knowledge and experience in science to that end. Her accomplishments, after her retirement from Boeing, include the study of the circular nature of Brahmaputra River by working with models; proving why the rivers Teesta, Santosh and Manas should not be linked; investigating the manmade floods of Guwahati; writing various articles in Amar Asom regarding Subansiri Dam and the deadly folly of making mega dams for hydroelectricity in the Eastern Himalayas, by India or China, pointedly due to their soft-soil nature, and explaining flooding in terms of rivers accumulating slit and sedimentation. This book is heavily illustrated with maps and diagrams to explain her understanding of the geological bases of the entire region that is not being considered in the hot pursuit ‘clean energy’ in the form of hydroelectric power, potentially a deadly choice for the region.
Arati Baruah is working on alerting citizens of Northeast India on the possible undesirable effects of China’s 60 Giga Watt dam on the grand canyon of Yarlung Tsangpo/Brahmaputra.

NORTHEAST INDIA IN THE VERTICAL GORGE OF TSANGPO: climate change and the crisis of Brahmaputra. For the benefit of Assamese readers outside India, Coolgrove Press is publishing (2021) Dr. Arati Baruah’s book titled Koilashor Pora Tsangpor Thio Gorat Utter-pub Bharat: Jalabayusalani, Brahmaputrarsankat (translated into English: NORTHEAST INDIA IN THE VERTICAL GORGE OF TSANGPO: climate change and the crisis of Brahmaputra). It was first published in India with favorable
reviews in Assam in 2020. An English version of the above work by the author is being prepared at Coolgrove, provisionally titled, Save the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra, Protect the Vertical Pole and Freeze Global Warming. As the titles might suggest, when it comes to international border crossing rivers, complex factors not limited to environmental, topographical and geological, affect the people who live in those river valleys.
